Samsung just wrapped up their event at IFA, where amongst the deeply shiny Galaxy Note II and other excitement, they took time out to discuss their first foray into the widening world of hybrid laptops – The ATIV Smart PC and Smart PC Pro, both of whom were teased in a recent video we discussed. Both devices feature 11.6″ screens, 3G & 4G, Micro HDMI and USB, with docking stations allowing charging and typing, bringing the experience closer to the Ultrabook’s we’ve come to know and adore. Interestingly, both tablets also come bundled with Samsung’s S Pen, allowing for over 1000 levels of pressure on the touch screen, pushing this squarely into the baskets of graphic designers/doodlers the world over.
Differences are obviously abound, however, with the Smart PC packing a lowly Clover Trail based Atom processor, 2GB of RAM, 128GB SSD and standard 1366×786 display alongside dual 2MP and 8MP cameras for both front and rear, whilst the “Pro” version finds Samsung throwing something of the kitchen sink at the Smart PC, bumping the processor up to a latest generation Core-i5 processor, adding a 1080p display, 4GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD to boot. Naturally, the tablet/laptop hybrids are running Microsoft’s soon to be released operating system Windows 8.
I know what you’re thinking, where’s the incentive for the lower end? Well, it turns out the standard model is packing an incredible-if-true 13.5 hour battery life with dock, whilst selecting the Pro model lands you a still impressive but less wild 8 hours without being tethered to the wall. If these numbers hold out in real life, we’re in for a wonderful Windows 8 based future.
No news on UK pricing for the Smart and Smart Pro but they’re due to land in the US on the 26th of October for $649 for the base Smart PC alone or $749 with the keyboard attachment, with the Smart PC Pro costing a slightly eye watering $1,119 with keyboard included.
